My hw freerunner experience was not so good, buzz problem, microsd
corruption when gsm is on, bass problem, broken weak aux button, etc.
For that reason I decided to not buy any new hardware before it will
be confirmed to be rock solid and the same applies for the kernel.
Finally last year I got an n900 accepting some closed parts that only
after few months were opened (the modem driver too!).
The result is that oFono supports the n900 modem and is used in meego
and Nitdroid (android port), while fsogsmd will support n900 without
the need of reverse engineering and the device is able to run any
linux distribution (pure debian, ubuntu, fedora, gentoo, etc.).
So if you cannot wait for the upcoming maemo6 (harmattan) or meego
device (that should be quite open too) the n900 may be the right
device.
regards
Niko
