Precedence: bulk JAPAN STARTS INVESTIGATING RICE AID TO INDONESIA January 8, 1999 Asahi Shimbun Administrative Vice-minister Yuki Takagi of the Department of Agriculture and Fishery announced at a regular press meeting on January 7 that the government had started investigating the aftermath of the 500,000 ton of aid rice that Japan lended to Indonesia since last summer. This was because Indonesian mass media reported that the rice continued to remain unused after arriving at local storages. Poster's note: Japanese media also reports the same situation of Japan's aid rice, but it gets little attention at the national level. Perhaps because the rice is after all a "loan", the government is not too worried as far as the Indonesian government can pay back later. *** ---------- SiaR WEBSITE: http://apchr.murdoch.edu.au/minihub/siarlist/maillist.html
