Precedence: bulk URGENT ALERT BY AGIO PERIERA, Executive Director ETRA (23.50 hours Melbourne, Australia) HATUDO (District of Ainaro, East Timor): Franscisco Magno arrested by ABRI's militia 'Mahidi' On Tuesday last, 5/4/99, Fransciso Magno was arrested by ABRI's militia and taken away. He was badly beaten and forced to mobilise 600 (six hundred) people from Hatudo-Ainaro to join ABRI's militia to go to Zumalai (eastern town) to formally join ABRI's militia. Francisco Magno refused to obey these demands so he was beaten by ten ABRI militiamen and left with broken bones. Francisco Magno was a Bupati (Administrator) of Ainaro, he was previously seen as a close associate of Cancio Carvalho (ABRI's militiaman) but distanced from them as a result of crimes committed by ABRI. Reports just received today say that this is why he is now in danger and facing death if he does not cooperate. The beatings were done by ABRI men but these men did not use uniforms. More updates will be sent. Agio Pereira Executive Director ETRA ---------- SiaR WEBSITE: http://apchr.murdoch.edu.au/minihub/siarlist/maillist.html
