PERNYATAAN PEMUDA TIMTIM KE KEDUBES AS
JAKARTA (MateBEAN, 18/4/99), Pada Rabu (14/4) lalu, 5 pemuda yang
mewakili rakyat Timor Timur menyampaikan sebuah surat pada penasehat politik
Kedubes AS Edmund F McWilliams berisikan keprihatinan mereka terhadap
situasi terakhir di Timor Timur. Berikut isi pernyataan lengkap mereka.

Secretary of State of the United States of America

Her Excellency,
On behalf of young generation of our oppressed People, we, the East Timorese
Youth come before you to remind Her Excellency and your government to pay a
piece of your sense of humanity to our beloved People which is facing an
endless tragedy perpetrated by Indonesia military and its armed militias. As
integral part of our People we are obliged to, by all means, protect and
voice out the deepest aspirations of our People. We call upon the government
of The United States of America and its allies to put the same attention and
reaction to the fate of East Timorese People which is massacring by
invaders army, Indonesian Armed Forces (ABRI).
Still fresh in our mind, when Her Excellency greet our Leader, Commander of
FALINTIL Xanana Gusmao, in Jacarta a couple of weeks ago. In our opinion,
that meeting was a de facto recognition of your government toward the long
struggle of Maubere People against the Indonesia's shameful and illegal
occupation over our Motherland. Her Excellency also use the opportunity by
giving promises and efforts of Her Excellency "to take resolute steps in
purpose to break off the circle of violation on the ground" and urges the
need to stabilize the situation by disarming all the paramilitary forces".
Your government also agreed with "the efforts of confidence building
measures among the interesting parties by reducing the number of Indonesian
troops, the presence of international institutions in order to avoid
violence in the future"
Your promises and efforts seem to be mere lip service. Hundreds of East
Timorese have died since the important meeting between Her Excellency and
our Leader, but there has been no action taken by your government and its
allies to materialize your promises. The barbarous murder of the East
Timorese people committed by Indonesian army and its paramilitaries has not
been properly addressed, particularly the recent massacre which took place
in Liquica on 5th and 6th of April 1999.
Officially, the United States of America is urging the government of
Indonesia to respect the international norms of relationship based on the
spirit to build New World Order. Nevertheless, based on the recent facts
facing by East Timorese People, this policy merely just an attitude of
hypocrisy. Although were under massive acts of oppression, we could see how
The United States and its allies take immediate reaction to various
political conflicts around the world such as the case of Kuwait, Iraq,
Bosnia and recent reaction taken by NATO in Kosovo. Do the East Timorese
People does not deserve a proper attention of international community as you
stated during the meeting with our Leader Xanana Gusm�o?
In order to promote and protect the value of human being as has been always
voicing by The United States, now it is the right time to your government to
materialize it in concrete efforts by:
1. Pressing the dictatorship regime of Indonesia to stop all its barbarous
atrocities and massive killings against East Timorese People.
2. Urging the international community to take concrete steps to find a just,
democratic and internationally acceptable solution for East Timor problem
based upon the fundamental aspirations of East Timorese People.
Regarding the important role played by United Stated as permanent member of
United Nations Security Council, it was reasonable for United States to take
a real role in promoting the presence of international community in East
Timor in order to create a conducive climate as pre-condition to guarantee
the process of direct popular consultation which is promoting by United Nations.
Expecting that this moral appeal could break the wall of western unbalanced
attitude towards East Timor case, in order to realize the collective ideal
to build a better world.
