RIO TINTO UNDER FIRE

LONDON, May 12 (Reuters) - Rio Tinto Plc, the world's
biggest mining company, came under fire at its annual
shareholders' meeting on Wednesday from environmental and
human rights campaigners from around the world.

Some 20 protesters brandished placards saying ``People
Before Profits'' and ``Rio Tinto -- corporate greed, global grief''
outside the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in London
where the meeting was held.

Friends of the Earth came to champion the rights of the people
of Madagascar and voice concerns over plans for a possible
ilmenite mine on the Indian Ocean island.

Human rights groups World Development Movement and
Survival also voiced concern about human rights in Irian Jaya,
Indonesia, where Rio has a stake in the Grasberg copper and
gold mine operated by U.S. firm Freeport McMoRan.

Rio's Wilson told the annual meeting that 1999 would be
another difficult year, although volumes were generally higher in
the first quarter than the same period last year. Wilson said
commodity prices so far this year had been lower than the 1998
averages.
