EAST TIMOR: RIGHTS COMMISSION IN DILI CONFIRMS AT LEAST 18 DEAD IN SUAI
Jakarta, April 28 (Lusa) - At least 18 people were killed and
10 others tortured or wounded by pro-Jakarta militias and Indonesian
troops between April 11 and 24 in the Suai district of East Timor,
the territory's Justice and Peace Commission reported Wednesday in
Dili.
The Commission, which is sponsored by the Catholic diocese of
Dili, also confirmed resistance allegations that bodies of the
victims had been dumped into a lake and a river near Suai, 200 kms
southwest of the East Timor capital. Nine Suai residents are still
missing.
The detailed report on the violence in Suai accuses members of
Battalion 744 of the Indonesian military, other security forces, and
the pro-Indonesia Mahidi and Laksaur Merah Putih militias of carrying
out the killings.
Indonesian military and police commanders, along with local
officials, are named as being directly responsible for murders, acts
of torture and kidnappings of East Timorese in Suai.
