BISHOP BELO AND NASCIMENTO LEAD MARCH FOR PEACE THROUGH DILI
Jakarta, May 13 (Lusa) - The two Catholic bishops of East
Timor, Carlos Ximenes Belo and Basilio de Nascimento, led a march for
peace Thursday through the streets of Dili, the territorial capital,
a religious source has told Lusa.
The march was "a symbol of peace and a protest against the
violence in East Timor, which continues to increase", the source
said. Dozens, if not hundreds, of East Timorese have been killed in
recent months in clashes between rival factions. The most recent
incidents took place Sunday and Monday in Dili, where pro-Indonesia
militiamen killed at least four independence supporters.
At a religious service before the march, Belo explained to
worshippers the process that will lead to the UN-supervised
plebiscite on autonomy or independence, planned for August 8.
Belo is a co-laureate of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded
in recognition of his efforts to achieve a peaceful solution for East
Timor, which has been occupied by Indonesia since 1975. -Lusa-
