Dear friends,

This is an important E-mail to you. Although there are other important and
dramatic news (about the shooting of Jakarta's police against more 70
students and young people on the 1st of July), I would like to beg your
attention on the international petition on bringing Suharto to trial, as
stated below.

I beg your kindness in helping us with the followings :

1. Please kindly communicate the text and the list of signatures
to your different friends and relations in other important organisations (in
Indonesia and abroad), asking them to participate in this campaign. We will
do our efforts to continue this campaign until next November (presidential
election).
2. We will be glad to receive from you a list of E-mail addresses (in other
countries, including in Indonesia) to which we can send the text of the
petition. You can send the list of the E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] It
would be ideal if this campaign can be supported by a strong international
network from various countries.

Many thanks in advance, and best regards,

Nico Albert

INTERNATIONAL PETITION DEMANDING
THE TRIAL OF SUHARTO

An international petition demanding that former President Suharto of
Indonesia be brought to a fair trial for his crimes in political, economic
and human fields was signed by representatives of political parties, labour
unions, women's organisations, and various non-governmental organisations
from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Australia, USA, and Europe, during
international meetings held in Paris. These meetings, organised by ATTAC*
(24/25/26 June 1999) and attended by about 1000 participants from 70
countries, focussed on the dictatorship of financial markets and the
disastrous effects of neo-liberal "globalisation" for many people in
different parts of the world.

Amongst topics raised in the meetings, the financial crimes committed by
leaders of various countries, in collaboration with the big multinational
companies and financial institutions were discussed. The case of former
President Suharto (amongst others) was as an example of a long-term
collaboration between military dictatorship and financial dictatorship. Such
collaboration caused the economic situation of many countries to worsen and
the democratic rights of the people to be crippled.

The signing of this petition may constitute an important encouragement to
the ever-growing demands in Indonesia voiced by student movements,
intellectuals, leaders of NGO's and political parties to bring Suharto to
trial.

Text of the Petition
SUHARTO SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO TRIAL

"During the 32 years of Suharto's presidency the people of Indonesia have
suffered gravely. Suharto is responsible for crimes against humanity, for
political and economic crimes, and of flagrant misgovernment.

Up to one million people were killed during the events which led to his
coming to power in 1967. Since then some 200 000 have been massacred in East
Timor, and tens of thousands in Aceh, Lampung, Irian Jaya ....Suharto has
caused hundreds of thousands to be detained arbitrarily for years (on Buru
island alone ten thousand were detained without trial, on average for ten
years). For 3 decades millions of ex-political prisoners were obliged to
carry special identity cards stating their status, thus making it almost
impossible for them to lead a normal life (to obtain work etc).

Suharto and his family have amassed a fortune estimated at 15 billion U.S.
dollars (TIME Magazine, 17 May 1999). Under his regime "K.K.N." (Korruption,
Kollusion and Nepotism) flourished at all levels in Indonesia.

To bring Suharto to a fair trial would satisfy a sense of justice and be a
lesson for future generations in Indonesia and elsewhere. But for this to
become possible, strong pressure from international opinion is needed in
order to bolster the efforts being made in Indonesia to this effect, as well
as to reform government and society and establish a responsible democracy.

Therefor the undersigned supports the campaign for Suharto to be tried
fairly, by an independent court of justice".
