PRESS RELEASE 12 JULY, 1999

The exodus Achehnese refugees at the Pidie Province, seeking refuge at the
Beureunuen and Rambayan Mosque have now reached 30,000, including men, women
and children.

As reported earlier, (see Press Release June 29), the exodus of Achehnese
refugees from the Tangse District, seeking refuge at the Beureunuen and
Rambayan Mosque, Pidie Province, Acheh, has now reached 30,000 people,
including men, women and children. They are fleeing from the Javanese-
Indonesian military operation in their villages for more than ten
days. The Indonesian troops are tracking ASNLF freedom fighter and
sympathizers who are struggling for their legitimate right of
self-determination and independence.

Meanwhile, the Achehnese refugees are living under desperate condition
because of the large number in small compound. It is also growing by the day,
whereby people from other villagers have joint the group. They are not
leaving the premises unless their safety is guaranteed from the UNHCR upon
their return and that the Javanese-Indonesian troops withdraw from Acheh.
At the same time, we call upon all NGOs and Human Rights Organizations, as
well as governmental organizations, dignitaries and individuals, to help
alleviate the plight of these Achehnese and stop human rights abuses
perpetrated by the Javanese-Indonesian regime in Acheh.
