DECLARATION OF THE ACEHNESE PEOPLE'S STRUGGLE FOR SELF DETERMINATION
Open Conference of the Acehnese People's Struggle for self-determination /
Referendum of Aceh was held last November 8, 1999 (Yesterday)
The rally was organized by the Center for Aceh Referendum (SIRA) and was
attended by 2 million Acehnese (almost 1/2) of total population of Aceh.
The Referendum March / Rally by about 2 million Acehnese, including
government officers, members parliament, NGOs, religious leaders,
socio-political groups, politicians, etc. went peacefully.
Below is the declaration for Referendum as was read the first time by the
legally elected officials government of Aceh. The Declaration to Hold
Referendum in Aceh was signed by the Provincial Legislative Body as well as
the local governments of all districts in Special Territory of Aceh and the
Vice Governor of Aceh: {The declaration was read in front of 2 million
people in Banda Aceh, also broadcast over the radio waves through-out the
territory}
The declaration was read by the head of newly elected legislative body, M.
Yus. Below is the points of the declaration {translation}:
1. Acehnese has the rights for self determination through a fair, peaceful
and democratic process and that the process through a referendum is the only
way to achieve it. The national and international community must accept this
democratic process in a positive manner.
2. The local parliament of Aceh promised that the Referendum in Aceh must be
transparent, peaceful and be done democratically.
3. Refused all form of Militarism in Aceh.
4. All the commitments and promises for Referendum in Aceh are to be
respected and followed for it is the wish of majority of the Acehnese.
