Hello, All!!
I have been corresponding with a Mr. Dave Stewart of OTS concerning the
problem of dealing with telesys servers 45, 46, 47, and 48. He responded
as follows:
The PPP problems with Telesys45-48: These access servers are the
only Cisco 5300s we have. They run a special IOS but we do use
the same version in some of the Cisco 5200s. Another difference
in the 5300 is that their modems are different. They are the new
MICA modems made by Telebit. They just released V.90 code for
them on Monday and we installed it on Wednesday. [And, yes, the
Windows users do not seem to have any problems with these
servers.] You may want to retry them to see if the problem still
exists. Again, there are a lot of Linux users. If they are all
having problems with Telesys45-48, they are quiet about it. This
could be because ACITS does not go to great lengths for Linux, and
they just don't bother to fight about it.
Getting any source code from Cisco is out of the question. They
are very proprietary and do not give it out since it would be a
competitive disadvantage if they did. Also, I doubt complaining
to them would help. I am familiar with their TAC and they require
very specific details on how their protocols do not work w.r.t.
the specs, i.e. PPP in this case. We have no information that
they are at fault. The empirical evidence that a 5200 works and a
5300 doesn't is not valid.
Did you see that part at the end of the first paragraph? The part where
it says "ACITS does not go to great lengths for Linux, and they just don't
bother to fight about it"? What the fuck?? ACITS _DOES_ seem to go to
great lengths for Winshit users, and they don't have to _FIGHT_ about shit
to get help, do they? Oh, OK. I suppose if you decide to go _buy_ an OS
than you're obviously more deserving of technical support than if you
can't afford one, right?
Folks, if you have had to alter your dialup scripts to abort if your
machine dials into one of these bad servers or if you just restart your
pppd whenever you get connected to one, PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE e-mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and tell them that they need to fix their servers!!
Apparently, they find it worth their time to stonewall us friendly Linux
users until we become a big enough pest to where it's easier for them to
fix the problem than come up with excuses as to why they can't. Even if
you haven't had this problem, we'd appreciate your sending them an e-mail
telling them that you'd like it fixed. Thank you for your time, and
thanks big-time if you e-mail them!
Zoicks!!
Robbo
