Basically, no.  You have to start up the whole "interface" ... SO is
rather unfortunately bloatware.  It even has its own window manager,
believe it or not.  Of course, it probably doesn't load all the
presentation tool code right away unless you actually open a
presentation document.  But when you get right down to it, SO is heavily
bloated.

I *only* use the word processor component of SO5, and only occasionally,
so I'll be quite glad when WordPerfect 8 is out.  I've been using WP
since 4.2 for DOS.  By the way, to preempt the crazed TeX zealot
contingent, yes I do know [La]TeX is very powerful, and I use XEmacs
daily to write code, but sometimes I just need to fire off a nicely
formatted, spellchecked letter or paper and I like word processors. 
It's unfortunate that SO is so bloated and slow.  If WordPerfect 8 can
convert MS Word 97 documents, I'll be able to wipe (150+ megs of) Star
Office off my disk.
