I am impressed with lyx. It will easily do anything from letters to books.
It provides an almost "wysiwyg" view.
The final document postscript can be previewed in ghostview before printing.

The latest version of lyx (lyx-1.0.0pre2.tar.gz 1840Kb) is at:
ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx
Note: this is considered a developement version.

There is also a kde version.
The regular version and the kde version are being developed separately
with the hope of eventually merging.

Lyx supports multiple languages, french, spanish, german and brazilian portugese
as well as turkish, russian, etc. It supports language specific keyboards.
and will allow switching from a primary to a secondary keyboard.

It will do accents easily.

With Layout - Document - Languaguage set to American
Options - Keyboard - Primary set to american
Options - Keyboard - Character set iso8859-1

I can type an accented e by hitting the accent and then the e.
And use the accent key in an unaccented manner by hitting it twice
i.e. for possessives.

It will also do mathematical typesetting.
