i'm sorry that you guys didnt speak up before i changed it when i
SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR COMMENTS.
let it be known i got 7 votes out of the 250+ folks on the list at the time,
and 2 were against, 5 for.

if you want to know why i've done it, it's so that people do finally have
the OPTION of replying to the sender instead of the whole list
(reply and reply to all now are different. learn how to use your mailer,
please)
i use that option frequently esp when i want to add some small detail to
others' replies that might not be of general interest to the list.

here's the more in-depth argument for it, thanks to chip rosenthal,
who gave the lurvely talk on spam last semester:

http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html

the fact of the matter is, unless you have a totally broken mailer,
all this means is that you need to change your reply type when you
want to respond to the list instead of just the sender. and hopefully,
it will keep flames and private comments from hitting the list so hard.

it does not reduce functionality in any way.

i do not plan to change it back.

i do plan (in the near future) to take the advice of amy boudloche
and set up a newsgroup "mirror" of the list so that you can read on demand
instead of getting all messages into your mailbox--i realize this list
is a little verbose for some people (it's among the least verbose out
of the 12 lists i read; 2MB of interesting mail a day sucks), and want to
make it possible for folks to stay subscribed without wasting much time
reading uninteresting mail.

i'll announce it to the list (and to the siglinux-announce list, which
you should be on if you're tired of the witty repartee of the list and
instead just want to find out about actual events and news--but since all
postings to the siglinux-announce list will be cc:ed to the siglinux
list, don't subscribe to both)
