I've made a lot of progress with everyones help but I'm still not
getting a reliable connection.
I'm dialing from X now without problems but it just disconnects and then
retries repeatedly
here are the messages:
cc kernel: PPP line discipline registered

cc pppd[932]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
cc chat[935]: Failed

cc ifup-ppp:pppd started for ppp0 on dev/modem at 115200
cc pppd[959]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
cc kernel:PPP: ppp line discipline successfully unregistered
cc chat[961]: failed
cc pppd[959]: Connect script failed
cc pppd[959]: Exit
Is there any way to watch it as it attempts to connect?
