egcs includes libstdc++ and builds so very beautifully i almost cried.
egcs+glibc 2.0.7+redhat 5.x works like a charm here.

er, except i don't build kernels with it.  i did once and had weird
problems (ie debugging didn't work one time).  redhat 5.1 has egcs
and gcc 2.7 packages which i'd stick with unless you plan to live
in 2.1.110+ land as they have been gcc-2.8 (and egcs) proofed.
