Make sure you don't have lp loaded into the kernel or as a module. Make sure you are using the right irq, see if you can change it in your bios and try it again. You need the parport_pc stuff loaded. Make sure nothing like lpd is running as well. I eventually got it working just by trying everything different that I could change until it worked.
