Irix isn't an operating system to run at home. It's something that
can be used only by companies which can afford support contracts with
SGI ($5k a year for an Octane).
Stick with Linux. Precision Insight has the best OpenGL drivers for
Linux at the moment. MetroLink seems to have foundered on this front.
I believe that Xi Graphics might have something as well. This is the
weakest link in the chain. From what I have been told, every 3D
software company (the important ones at least) has ported to Linux
already and is waiting on the drivers in order to ship.
(A friend of mine who works for a graphics software company ported his
company's flagship product to Linux in a matter of a day during last
year's SIGGRAPH.)
Side Effects Software has announced Houdini for Linux. One of the
oldest graphics companies in the world will be announcing their
offerings for Linux in time for SIGGRAPH. And then I know of another
that will probably do so as well.
Then there's always Blender, which is available for free (as in of no
cost but not including source):
