I was having that same problem a few months ago.  Really, I have never
configured a box that did not have some variation on the problem of
connecting to UT over the Internet.

My recommendations are as follows (based on experience with netcfg 3
days ago):

*   make sure you press SAVE at the bottom of each window that offers it
('network configurator/names,  /interfaces).
*   be sure you check the 'DEBUG CONNECTION' box on the 'Edit PPP
Interface' window, it is easy to forget that.
*   try everything over and over and in different combinations. 
eventually it will work :)

Perhaps you could show me how to set the alias for /sbin/ifup ppp0.
