what is with this idea that you can't have a little of both, you *have* to
have 100% open software with an open OS.. could it be that running Oracle
on Linux is better than on NT?

it has more to do with the development goals, imho.. the model is bad, but
the goals of their development are often different from what their
customers would prefer..

because sometimes companies who make proprietary software, and have been
doing it for 10 or 20 years, just know better than us.. sure, they could
open up their software, but companies like oracle have put billions into
developing their software.. maybe down the road an open-source alternative
could surpass theirs, maybe in a year or two they'll contribute to some
open-source SQL server, but for now their product offers the
enterprise-level functionality that some people need.. it also offers
something that businesses need when they run software - someone to blame..
not only to make them feel better when shit goes wrong, but because you
need someone who is responsible to help you out when it screws up.. if I'm
the maintainer of JuSQL and company x is running it, their server goes
down, they call me for help, and I have a headache, they're just screwed
and will have to wait.. Oracle will help them..

open-source is a success.. netscape is a major exception which,
unfortunately, was one of the first big names that brought attention to
the movement..

I haven't spoken with him in person but the president of SATLUG in San
Antonio was blown off by him because he had a button that said ' San
Antonio Texas Linux Users Group' instead of '.. GNU/Linux ..' He was
talking with him, he was polite, then all of a sudden said something like
'I noticed your nametag there says 'Linux' and not 'GNU/Linux' and then
basically turned around and didn't talk to him anymore..

are you sure? last I checked it hadn't been updated for months, maybe I'm
thinking of something else.. RMS has basically adoped Linux as *HIS* GNU
operating system..

go figure..
