1) I love tools, for their own sake. My computer is by FAR the most
powerful, versatile tool I ever laid hands on. Linux is by far the most
powerful, versatile way to wield that tool.
2) If my Linux box is broken, I have some hope for remedy. I'm not a
hacker, but I can follow directions. With Windows/NT, there may or may not
be a fix, but there probably isn't clear instruction. With Linux, clear,
up-to-date documentation is literally at my fingertips, on demand. If that
ain't enough, there are a thousand people on 300+ newsgroups/mailing lists
who WANT to help. For free. Tailored to the level of MY skills, on MY
hardware.
3) The underlying concept of communal development and ownership not only
appeal to me, but seem to me to be the only workable model for the
computing future. I OWN my copy of Slackware in a way and at a functional
level that is not even in the universe MS inhabits.
4) I like it.
