I've been installing linux on Toshiba Portege's for some of my users, and
they seem to be quite good. The smaller ones (Portege' 3015/3025) are
3/4" thick, weigh less than 3 pounds, and run around $1500. I personally
have a hard time with the size of laptop keyboards, but if you can handle
the IBM button mouse, this is probably the machine to get. It looks cool,
