and a waste of money...er. i've been looking into wireless for my house
(i live stumbling distance from my office, where i am conveniently LAN
admin...) you can buy kit good for a megabit over 8 miles (!) for around
$1500, and then you never have to pay an ISP again.

of course you should be fairly certain you and your job haint gonna move,
but i'm willing to make that assumption (altho in fact my job is moving,
it's about 2 blocks and it won't be any further from my place).

the company who makes this technology is breezecom, with an intuitively
named website =). a local reseller of this technology (get in line for
a demo =)) is...oh crap, i have the name at work. if anyone's interested,
you can get their name from breezecom or email me privately.

i'm hoping for 3mbit since i'm so close (their tech varies 3->1 based on
range), and the no-isp-fees-ever+static ip+work's net is UTNET = !suck
scene really appeals to me. i've actually got the cash for this (expense
will be amortized after 2 years the way i see it...$70/mo ADSL x 24 mos =
more than i'll pay for this, plus i get to keep the kit at the end of
things.

and to keep this vaguely on topic, they have pcmcia cards that can talk
to their antenna within a building, and they have linux drivers for them
even tho their website doesn't mention em. $400 is a little steep tho
considering airport (http://www.apple.com/airport) gives 11mbit for
significantly less.

texas.net is my standard isp recommendation. jonah is an obnoxious bastard
but their tech is solid and generally overkill...not many isps are ahead of
the equiptment/bandwidth curve. but i guess theyre not phat bandwidth
providers...
