One book that I bought early on was Richard Stevens' "Advanced
Programming in the Unix Environment". This is a classic reference and
ought to be on anyone's shelf. (right along side Stevens' "UNIX
Network Programming" and perhaps his TCP/IP books)

Don't worry about getting a programming book with linux in the
title. In fact, if you get one like that you can be assured of two
things - it is probably not a very high quality book (most linux books
are worthless trash put out in a hurry by publishers trying to make a
quick buck on a trendy topic) and it is probably outdated. (linux is
a moving target. it's better to stick with a long lasting reference
book for the core unix parts and use online resources for the other
stuff)

That's not to say they are all bad, but you've got a much better
chance of getting a good book by getting a generic UNIX book.

Two other shorter classic UNIX books to check out are "Advanced Unix
Programming" (Rochkind) and "The UNIX Programming Environment"
(Kerninghan and Pike). Both are shorter books and cover things in
much less detail. But, they have more exposition which can be good.
