If it is starting at a really low rez it means X11 isn't figuring
out what your card is and is just defaulting to the 486-VLB-512k video
memory-era (plain-old) VGA X11 server. The v770 iirc is a TNT chipset
(tnt2). Nvidia recently released X servers for their whole line (riva
128, tnt, tnt2). It doesn't support hardware 3d accel yet, because AFAIK
X11 itself doesnt yet (mmmm, xfree86 4.0), but at least you'll get much
better 2d performance (refresh, rez, et al.). Go to the nvidia website,
www.nvidia.com IIRC, and look under support or drivers or some such. You
should find a page with downloadable (rpms? tgzs?) and lots of
documentation and commentary by the nvidia developer doing the project.
Look at it this way, at least you got to see how purty X11 was up
reeeeeeeeal close. ;^)
Hope that helps,
mike
