i believe that's the same problem i was having with Mandrake-linux6.1.
It seems to use an initrd, which i really don't understand how to make
or what added benefits it gives, but there is an option to compile
initrd support in the kernel, but after compiling the new kernel, you
have to make a new initrd for it. Basically, i just skipped making a
new initrd and when editting the lilo.conf, i didn't add (for example)
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.13-7mdk.img to the new image.
i don't know if that's really the same problem your having, just kinda
sounded like it to me but i'm definately no expert. (yet)
