Ok now we must differentiate between a dvd-r / dvd-rw and dvd-ram.

dvd-r/rw == expensive (over 5 grand)
                    discs written by dvd-r/rw can be read in ANY dvd-rom
unit..

dvd-ram == not as expensive (300 +)
                    discs cannot be read in any other dvd-rom unit, be it in
a
                    computer or standalone. ONLY readable in other dvd-ram
                    units.
                    "DVD-RAM is simply a storage device and does no encoding
or
                      decoding.  Simplisticly, you could think of it as the
optical equivalent
                      of a removeable hard disk drive."
