Hello all,

Could anybody recommend any sources of information on how to set up an
Xstation? I either seem to be missing some details somewhere, or running
into some bugs. I thought it would be simple to find some kind of HOWTO,
but no...

Here is my situation. I won a Multia from TheLinuxStore. While I was able
to get it to netboot, I really wanted a self-contained unit, so I put a
2.1 Gb 2.5" IDE drive in it, and since I wanted more than 8-bit color, I
added an S3Virge/DX (4Mb). The latter required building a new kernel w/o
TGA support...

The Multia is running RH6.1, and my main box is running RH6.0. I primarily
use KDE. I am able to do 'X -query mainbox', and get the login screen
and can log in. I resolved the various authentication problems, so that I
can run clients on either machine...

However, I have run into two problems. First, when I logout, the panel and
the window manager quit, but the background remains. The login screen
never reappears, and none of the mouse buttons have any effect. I have to
ctrl-alt-bksp to terminate X. The second problem is, if I turn my back for
10 or 15 minutes leaving X up and my session logged in, I sometimes come
back to find the same state...all my apps closed, the window manager and
panel gone...

I suspect the latter has something to do with the screensaver...although I
have verified that it works manually without triggering this problem. I
use xscreensaver rather than the KDE screensavers...Of course, running the
screensaver over the network is just plain silly. How would I configure X
to tell it to start xscreensaver on the Xstation side when I start it?

TIA,

Simon
