Yes. If you have unused space on your harddrive you can have Linux &
Windows on the same computer. You choose at startup which to boot.

It's democratic. Most of the programs you need/want are free. The
documentation is not as well-written a Windows, but there's a lot more
useful info. You get to learn how your box does what it does.
It's MUCH faster, and MUCH less likely to stop dead in the middle of
something important.
Downside: you will be required to learn some basic sysadmin skills, a
very little bit (depending on your taste for it) of basic programming &
computing theory, and a lot of what's automatic in Windows must still be
set up by you, the first time, in Linux. This last con is actually a pro.
The non-automation allows for much more flexibility in what you end up
with.

Endless. Seriously, a basic box-o'-linux can be configured as a
full-featured webserver, afirewall, a gaming machine (Quake, Hexen,
Civilization, MythII,etc.), a GIS/graphics workstation, an office desktop
(MS-format compatible word processing, spreadsheets, database,
presentations), or all-around utility box.

Partly, the raw political/economic power of M$ is frighteningand
enfuriating, and Linux is a way out. Partly, you can only tinker with
a Windows box on the surface. Mostly, *It's FUN!*

 You just did.
