ok, well i installed xfree86 4.0 on the athlon machine, so now i have both
systems running the same version of X, same bit depth (24) and resolution.
the phenomenon persists. everything is much faster on the pentium. despite
the massive difference in hardware specs. dropping down to 16bit isn't
really a solution to me. i'd really appreciate some other ideas on this, it's very
frustrating to build a box to succeed another and find the older one smokes
the newer.
