Would really doubt that it was anything to do with samba - there was
a root exploit recently for sendmail with kernel < 2.2.16, but this
could only be enacted by local users.

I believe there was (yet another) remote exploit for sshd a few months
back - may want to investigate this in bugtraq archives after you
determine what version you're running.
