This sounds similar to a problem I had when I started running xdm instead
of startx; I got the "MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 authentication rejected" part of
the error message. I *think* what I did to fix this was add:
DisplayManager._0.authName: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
to
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config
Try it and see.

Hrm. Dunno about that one. Is the display responsive at all?
Can you control-alt-f1 to a terminal?
