I think the MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 problem is unrelated to your mouse issue;
the symptoms of authentication problems would be that x applications would
not be able to start. Let's call that one a nuisance until the other is
sorted out.

Hmm. I'm not totally full of clue about how X works, but I would imagine
that it must be doing some re-initialization of the video and mouse when
you switch between terminal and X mode. If you haven't made any software
changes to your system (new version of an xserver or x libs, change to
XF86config, new 3d virtual reality headset, etc) I would attempt to
isolate the problem by swapping hardware out, starting with the mouse and
ending with the video card. Swapping to a different video card entirely
will probably tell you something.
I did a quick search for the "Q < 10.666667" error message on google, got
a lot of hits but no answers. It is probably worth looking into more...
