ANNOUNCING : Thursday A-LUG / Austin Linux Users Group is back at Emperor Systems ; TOPIC: Linux Infrared Remote Control Presenter: Mark Farver Date: Thursday, December 21, 2000 Location: Emperor Systems Software Linux Infrared Remote Control (LIRC) seeks to control Linux using your television's (or pretty much any other device's) IR-based remote control The frequencies used are different and incompatible with IrDA (Infrared Data Association). LIRC is fun for MP3 players, or checking e-mail while sitting on the couch. With the addition of one of the cheap X-10 firecracker controllers, the holiday lights can be placed under remote control while fancy Perl scripts create different lighting schemes. With a scan converter (or video card with TV-out) web browsing is possible on TV. Use it to flip slides in StarOffice presentations. Additionally, LIRC can generate IR commands: log in to Linux remotely and start up a cron job to record MacGyver at 10:00. Or, use ntp to make sure the VCR clock is accurate to atomic standards. The receiver requires a $3.00 dollar integrated IR demodulator from Radio Shack, and a couple of glue components to connect it to any serial port. There are a few quirks to the LIRC system. For example, having to recompile the kernel with serial support as a module. Please join me Thursday (December 21, 2000) for a demonstration of the hardware and software involved. You'll find directions to the meeting here. -Mark Farver, Presenter PLUS + FREE beer and refreshments courtesy of your host, Old Saint Nick.
