Personally, I agree that we should change the name permanently. I think we
owe more to GNU than Linus Torvalds. Linux is a nice kernel, lots of
drivers, pretty stable, etc, but I would not be using Linux if it were
Linus's kernel, Motorola's Codewarrior, MetroX, and CDE. True, not all of
these apps have been replaced by GNU apps, but GNU and BSD applications are
the basis of what we started from. I didn't compile my kernel with Visual
C++ or CodeWarrior. Linux succeeded because it joined into the GNU
community. As far as BSD apps go, I don't know if I have any on here for
that matter, but the BSD license does not guarantee us the source code for
improvements on those tools.
So, let's change the name, bring him here to a big conference room and
properly promote the speech. This is our chance to expand to be the
organization IMHO we should be, moneywise and participationwise. Like it or
not, this is a Microsoft campus, this could be the first step to change that.
A bunch of people sitting around all day emailing doesn't get that changed.
