I think the best solution is to get a monthly meeting together, and make every other one an installfest. I understand there are regular ACM meetings, but I don't think those are generally inviting or useful to people outside of CS. It would be good for new users to have that group to talk to consistently. I don't know how many times I gave my emails out to people at installfests and never heard back from them directly or through the list. Personally I've converted more people to Linux and Mac OSX at the IEEE ComSoc weekly meetings since we're always there to help them in person along the way.

Sorry, my wording wasn't very careful. My intention is not necessarily
to create a separate group, but perhaps to broaden the scope and
audience of current efforts. My impression was that siglinux is a
student organization -- which is great -- I just thought a more general
name / organizational structure might bring in more people across
campus. A special interest group of the (T)ACM may not sound as
appealing as a general LUG to say someone coming from biology who
doesn't know anything about ACM (like me). However, I don't want to
change things unless there is a general interest in doing so. Much of my
motivation stems from the dismal level of support for Linux in the
school of biological sciences (nada). Perhaps I should try to organize
biosci Linux users to join with siglinux, although at the moment it may
be just me...

while more linux is never a bad thing, is there enough intrest in having

I setup a UTLUG email list at

http://www.keittlab.org/mailman/listinfo/utlug

There is no UT Linux Users Group on campus at the moment. The list is
for anyone who is interested in starting one.

Tim
