I typed ssh -v and many lines were output.  Seemed to be some sort of
man type info.  One of the lines said this:

-X enable X11 connection forwarding

...this seems to be the sorta thing I want.  So, maybe it at least
thinks it is able to run ssh -X.

I am not sure what you mean.  I have invoked these windows the only
way I know how.  To go under Applications then Utilities then click
on Terminal.  I suspect that means I am "running 'terminal' on the
macos [macros?] X machine." and that I am not runnning
from an xterm.
