Oh plans, yes, plans exist. :)

However, we currently lack people who have time to implement it.
So no, you didn't overlook anything, it's simply not supported at
the moment. Adding PV support would be doable from my side but the
remaining stuff (making libsigrok's session bus support that
kind of data packet, creating a suitable driver for serial,
adding support for generating python objects from input data in
libsigrokdecode) is unfortunately time consuming and the benefit
to the general audience simply isn't there to warrant spending time
on this at the moment.

My recommendation? Get an FX2 somewhere for $10 and use that.
I know it's not what you want to hear but it's currently the least
painful if you want to use sigrok to look at serial data.
