Guys, Facts are always good...
For every David Jones - hi David :-) - there's another 100 who don't get funding. We also need to split between angel funding and VC funding. In terms of angel funding locally, there are a few options; Innovation Bay, Sydney Angels, and BSI are currently at the fore in terms of pitchfests. The reality is that the tide is firmly out for angel funding - in my estimation, we're probably at about 10% of the activity of 2007, and although we wish for better times...nothing has changed for at least 18 months - here's hoping (an angel co-investment fund like the Kiwis would be helpful). In terms of VC, we can almost count active funds on the fingers of one hand (a couple of clean tech IIF's, Starfish, etc.). This will almost double with the new IIF round - investing Q2/Q3 next year. It's still a very shallow pool. You could go abroad, but the success rate is extremely low - Atlassian is a clear outlier. If you're looking for less than $10m, you can basically forget about non Aussie funding (there are some great exceptions - but keep your expectations realistic). Overall, if you're not in clean tech, or for smaller investments in digital media (particularly in Sydney) - thanks Dominic Carosa for propping up the market !!...beyond Dom and the VC's, you're basically on your own...unless you know an angel personally. VC funding is generally a factor larger than angel funding - there's a shortage of both... How do I know ? Through COMET, I've supported over 150 mainly NSW/ Sydney based start-ups...and overall the COMET network has over 1,500 companies in it. My companies have raised over $100m in early stage capital...not much of it in the last 18-24 months, even though we've funded millions of dollars of intermediary activity... Anyway, have fun and good luck, Matthew.
