I think it is very possible to find Angel Investors in Australia -
there are plenty of wealthy people who would like to invest both to
diversify their portfolio and to be a part of something exciting.
There are rich corporate, medical etc folk that have lots of money but
have less in the way of job satisfaction, etc. Many enjoy being part
of a high energy innovative start-up.

That being said, I think there are very few Angel Investors relative
to the tech industry in Australia that can offer more than just their
money, and general business mentoring per se ie, they can't offer
relevant contacts, specific commercialisation experience, industry
experience etc. Receiving "smart money" can make each dollar worth a
lot more. In the Bay Area there are many many many people that have
had success commercialising products and exiting businesses at a
premium. This relevant experience combined with money is a powerful
offering to the start-up!

As many have mentioned however bootstrapping can also be a great path
to successful business. It forces you into the coalface in many areas
and forces you to gain commercial traction quickly. It is probably
worth experiencing both routes at various stages of your
entrepreneurial journey :)
