Regarding physical books, I like the idea of building a library for
posterity. You don't have to read all the books you buy,
but you can keep them so that when you want to consult them, they are
there. Before I do that though, I tend to look
at the table of contents, bibliography and index so that I have a fair idea
as to what I can get from them.

Obviously this works with non-fiction and not so much with fiction.

As far as articles on the internet go, I use signals from Twitter and read
fairly narrowly: anything regarding misinformation,
polarisation, journalism, information overload, the culpability of tech
companies, etc. and stuff on mental health and these days,
gender and caste.
