The best (though eventually something that was prone to stifling by walled
gardens) approach to this problem was one attempted by FriendFeed.
Unfortunately FB understood the danger of something like it existing,
bought it and put it to death.

Right. If the users developed a habit of seeing only what they wanted to
see, how could these companies push advertisements and recommended
algorithmic content at the user to encourage longer engagement?
