I tend to think of it as a way to fight our demons, most of which are
internal in my case, so I call myself a smug Buddhist, which my jokey term
for the way I have understood and use Jungian analysis to deal with life
and demons.

I think that science is pretty clear in that what it proves is true, what
it proves untrue is untrue and everything else is possible until proven
true or untrue. We tend to forget the latter two parts of it, which traps
us into very rigid scientism responses to religion. I say we because I have
a visceral physical revulsion response to religion and religious rites
chants etc, especially Hindu, and in recent times have been trying to do
the Jungian thing and go where my ego says NO GROSS EW NO and see why this
is in my shadow and how I can integrate it. I don't know where this quest
will lead but hopefully to a place that is more stable and balanced?

My point is that I think religion is an easy way to get
community--something that is hard to fine easily in modern urban life--and
a way to fight those demons, which makes to really hard to resist. I feel
like those of us how don't like the trappings of religion end up with other
kinds of things that explain the scaries, whatever our personal scaries
are, whether it is science to feel like you can make sense of the world and
understand what makes it tick, or Jungian analysis where you feel like you
can make sense of yourself and what makes you tick :)
