Speaking only for myself, I call this question banal because it is
basically a default way to start a conversation, and shows (to me) a lack
of effort to know the person, and/or a desire to see how the connection can
be mined for some work-related purpose. It is certainly possible to build
upon this to make genuine connection happen, but all too often isn't.
