I was going to reply to your question with "Yes, it might be simpler,
but the D30 viewfinder isn't the most helpful when it comes to manual
focusing, and there isn't much time, and I've tried it before and had
no worthwhile results" blah blah.

But I decided to try it again anyway.

And I hadn't realised just HOW MUCH my D30+75-300 sucks at autofocus.
I'm getting *dramatically* better results with manual focusing (though
I need more practice), even handheld. I don't know whether I should be
blaming the body or the lens, so I'm heaping blame generously on both.

Manual focusing is apparently always more reliable, often much faster
(no hunting back and forth), silent (no motor, no focus-confirmation
beep), and drastically decreases the perceived shot-to-shot lag time.

Here are some recent photographs. As I said, I need more practice. But
maybe there's some hope for me yet.
