With an indian bank - thats a bad move. With banks in (say) hong kong - its not too bad even with the HKD 25 transaction fee for overseas use of an ATM [make a large enough withdrawal and it isnt too bad]. I'd still use a credit card if the guy there isnt actually insisting on cash. Get spending money for a whole week at one go, ideally, when you use an atm.

Its a far better idea to have cash lying around though from previous trips. Saves you having to pop your atm card in as soon as you land, for cab fares etc.
