Yes, Chikmagalur is a great place. It's nearly the same altitude as Bangalore so has the same weather, sans the pollution, and is within an hour's drive from the coffee estates.
BTW, I checked up on the name. Apparently it's not a "Small Mangalore". Legend has it a local king divided his property among his daughters, and the town's hence chikka-magala-uru ("Small daughter's town"). The older daughter's town didn't do as well, but is somewhere in the neighbourhood.
