Once again the English-speaking peoples find themselves in the
forefront of protecting civilisation.
An updated White Man's Burden argument, methinks.
If I may expand on that -- it's posh begging. Bin Laden probably
delivers the same rant, only in Arabic.
Having grown up under the specter of the MAD doctrine, I'm not sure why
people are getting all hand-wringing existentially-crisisy over the
recent batch of crazies[0]. Keeping in mind what we've been through
over the last century, to my eyes the nuts who shriek that
"english-speaking peoples must save civilisation(sic)"[1] and the nuts
who shriek that "mujahideen must save civilization" are just two sides
of the same coin, and giving money and power to either the Blimps or
the Beards is about as brilliant as giving whiskey and car keys to
teenage boys.
But obviously the english-speaking electorate, thus far, has disagreed.

[0] this has ominous parallels with the start of the last century, when
everyone was worried about the bogeyman of bomb-throwing Anarchists,
but in the end, it was the emperors who did themselves in, in their
eagerness to go to war.
[1] Will the Telegraph not admit that, ever since the British
"victories" of 1918 and 1945, civilization has been written with a 'z'?
