Sure, demand outstrips supply, and there's a vast pool of unqualified
people trying their best to get their foot in the door, but surely
this doesn't mean there are no qualified people?

Oh, thank you. :) Reading your mail suddenly reminded me why I freelance instead of holding a steady job.

Despite working on the most demanding of projects, finishing my work well in time, taking on more than a person in my position could have - I was asked the most absurd questions at my first workplace. My performance was apparently a function of what my immediate boss saw. Well, she saw a happy person and couldn't digest that. When I complained to the HR - my boss stormed in and roared about how disloyal I was. Needless to say, she got a raise and I left my job.

Incompetent people like her need people they can bully. But what of the entire HR machinery that stood by and saw the show. Unfortunately, in the quagmire of reviews and suchlike, some of their jobs depend on her as well.

My first job has made me suspicious especially of organisations that claim to love their people. I could do without such stifling, claustrophobic love that requires me to prove I am adding to their benefit every fifteen minutes, as opposed to looking at the sum total of productivity.

As an employee - you remain a suspect.

Brilliant stuff Jace..
