so what sort of beans are we talking about exactly? (green) beans [1]? dried beans [2]? or chana dal which is what occurred to me, not knowing the kannada etymology of bengal i thought it may refer to bengal gram (apparently very good for diabetics [3]).

Any of the above, really. Need not be beans, too. "Kaalu" is an all purpose word for seeds or legumes. It can even be generalised to mean 'grain' or a small particle of some sort.
